Senior Care Tips By the Room: Keeping the Kitchen Fresh and Healthy

Senior Care La Jolla CA

Keeping your aging loved one’s kitchen fresh and clean is an important part of maintaining their health both by reducing the chances of contracting a foodborne illness or other type of infection carried by the germs that can grow in a kitchen, and by encouraging your loved ones to eat a wider variety of fresh, homemade foods rather than resorting to prepared foods and takeout because they do not want to deal with a messy kitchen. This does not mean, however, that you have to spend all of your time scrubbing and disinfecting the kitchen to make sure that it stays fresh and healthy for your loved ones. There are a few simple ways that you can keep up with the cleaning needs of the kitchen and ensure that it stays fresh in between deep cleanings.

Some ways that you and your parents’ senior health care services provider can help to keep your parents’ kitchen fresh and healthy on a daily basis include:

  • Repurpose citrus peels. Eating citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, or lemons is a great way for your parents to get essential vitamins and even add a little hydration into their diet. When you peel these fresh fruits, make sure you do not just throw the peels away. Instead, grind them through their garbage disposal with a little water. The processing with release the essential oils in the grinds, eliminating odors in the drain and filling the room with a fresh scent
  • Add baking soda to the trash can. Even with fantastic quality garbage bags, you are likely to experience the occasional spill or leak into the bottom of the garbage can. This can create an unpleasant situation, especially if the leak goes unnoticed for a few days. Reduce the odor and make cleanup easier by sprinkling a layer of baking soda into the bottom of the trash can before adding the trash bag. This way if there is a leak, the baking soda will absorb it and all you have to do is shake it out and add new baking soda
  • Rotate food. When you come back from the grocery store, do not just push the food into the refrigerator wherever it will fit. Take the time to rotate the older food to the front and the new food to the back to reduce waste and prevent spoiling that can create bad odors, spills, and even the potential for foodborne illness. Every three days, go through the refrigerator and dispose of uneaten leftovers and foods past their expiration date
  • Wipe the counters. Little spills and crumbs are easy to ignore, but they can build up to much worse messes, and attract pests into the house. Make wiping down the counters, even if you do not see any obvious messes, a part of your daily routine. This will ensure you pick up any little things you might have missed, and prevent small messes from building up to big ones.
