Talking about driving with your senior is more of a loaded conversation than you might think. There are a lot of minefields you’re going to need to clear to get where you want to go.
Driving Talks Are Difficult
These are not easy conversations to have with your senior. She’s likely been driving for a while and there’s a lot of her identity wrapped up in being able to drive where and when she wants. Anything that threatens that identity, even if it’s something that’s accurate, can be troublesome.
Don’t Veer Off Course
You’ve got to stick to the topic at hand. Whether your senior wants to change the subject or you end up talking about other issues that are making you uncomfortable when you talk about driving the talk needs to stay about driving. If you don’t, it’s going to be really tough to come to a solution.
Focus on Safety
You might feel like you don’t know what to talk about or how to broach driving with your senior at all. The easy answer here is that you need to focus on safety. That’s really what you’re worried about, after all. It’s your senior’s safety as well as the safety of the other people on the road with her that really matters.
Have Some Examples Handy
Going into this conversation without some solid examples is going to make everything that much more difficult. If you’ve had a chance to observe your senior’s driving, now is the time to talk with her lovingly about what you witnessed. There might be examples from other family members, too. Make sure they’re okay with you sharing what they told you so that you don’t disrespect their confidence in having shared with you.
Give Her Options
If you can approach this conversation with options and answers, that’s going to give you much better results. Your senior may be worried that she’ll end up stuck at home, with no way to get anywhere. Talk to her about possible options, such as hiring senior care providers to do the driving. That allows her to be mobile, but within some safe limits that you’ve agreed upon together.
You might not get as far in one talk as you wanted, and that’s okay. The important thing is that you’ve opened up the topic with your senior and made it clear that you want the best for her. From there you can keep trying to get to a compromise that you both find acceptable.
