Senior Care in La Costa CA Going through a heart attack can be a frightening and life-changing experience. Unfortunately, for over 210,000 of the more than 730,000 people who suffer a heart attack each year, it is not the first attack, but a subsequent one. This can be a scary thing for both your parent and you to realize, but accepting that a second or third heart attack is a possibility can help you to clarify your care efforts so that you can protect your parent from a future heart attack after they have already suffered one.

Use these tips to protect your parent from suffering another heart attack:

  • Stop smoking. One of the most important things that you can do to help your parent avoid a future heart attack is to encourage them to stop smoking. There are no health benefits to using tobacco, and a variety of serious risks, including increasing the chances of your aging parent suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, and other health complications.
  • Control blood pressure. One of the greatest risk factors for heart disease and heart attack is high blood pressure. Having blood pressure that is higher than is healthy strains the heart, causing it to work harder, eventually thickening it and putting it at risk of a heart attack. If your parent is suffering from high blood pressure, talk to their doctor about ways that you can help them to manage their blood pressure and reduce the strain on their heart.
  • Get more active. One of the best things that you can do to help your parent to avoid a second heart attack is to encourage them to be as active as possible. Staying physically active protects your parent from a second heart attack from many angles. Like other muscles throughout the body, exercise strengthens and conditions the heart muscle, making it stronger and more effective. Being more active also encourages a healthy weight, which further protects against heart attack. Just adding a half an hour of exercise to your parent’s routine five days a week can dramatically improve their health and guard their heart for a healthier future.
  • Eat a healthier diet. What your parent eats can make a dramatic difference in the health and wellbeing of their heart. Some foods can be dangerous for their heart, increasing the chances that they will suffer a heart attack. Others, however, can greatly improve their heart health and reduce the chances of a heart attack. Talk to your parent’s doctor about the dietary guidelines that they should follow in order to help protect them from another heart attack, and then take steps to help them to follow these guidelines. This can include going to the grocery store with them to help them to choose the foods that are best for them, cooking with them to help them prepare meals that are healthier, and suggesting better options for snacks, beverages, and meals that address their flavor preferences and what are familiar to them while keeping them as heart healthy as possible.
