One of the biggest parts of caregiving is facing your loved one’s problems and finding solutions that work to resolve them for her. That can take a lot of research and brainstorming to make sure you have the right answers.
Start with a Complete List of Issues
Grab a piece of paper or a fresh journal page and start making a list of your loved one’s symptoms or issues. Leave some space so that you can keep problems and their potential solutions together. Write down everything that you can think of or that is a major problem for you or your loved one so that you can start finding solutions.
Brainstorm Solutions
In the beginning, you’re looking for all of the solutions that might work, so it’s not about ruling anything out yet. You’re brainstorming to find a variety of potential answers. For instance, if your loved one isn’t eating right, you might write down potential solutions like having loved ones bring meals to her, making meals ahead of time, or even hiring elder care providers to cook for her.
Do Some Research
The research phase is where you’re going to determine how practical and feasible your potential solutions are. In the example above, you might research by first finding out which of your loved one’s other family members are able to pitch in and bring meals. If none of them are able to help out, that means that’s not a workable solution. As you sort through potential solutions, you might start to find new ones in your research. One option might be having ingredients from a meal planning company sent to your loved one.
Narrow Down the Best Solutions
After you’ve done all of your research, you’re probably in a much better position to be able to narrow down the best solutions from the options you have available. Keep in mind that the best solutions for you and your elderly loved one may not be the same ones as for other people. It’s all about what works for you.
Keep it All in a Journal
Now that you’ve got all of this brainstorming and research, hang onto it. You never know when you’ll need to revisit the situation and find either another solution or a different way to approach the problem. Keeping these notes in a journal or a notebook allows you to refer back to them whenever you need them.
As you gain more experience with caregiving, this type of problem solving gets easier to do.
