September is National Preparedness Month. In your experience as your aging parent’s family caregiver, this is an important month for helping them to live the safest, healthiest quality of life as they age in place. During this month you should focus on helping your parent to understand the potential risks that they face as pertains to natural disasters and other emergencies that could occur in their area, as well as what you can do to prepare them for how to get through these situations in the best way possible. Making National Preparedness Month a part of your parent’s care is important for supporting their independence, autonomy, and quality of life as they age in place.
Some ways that you can make National Preparedness Month a part of your parent’s care include:
- Talk about the potential for emergencies. Take some time to talk to your parent about the disasters that are common in their area. Remember that even if they do not live in an area that is commonly considered “at risk” of disasters, such as coastal towns or the Midwest, does not mean that they are not at risk. Talk about natural disasters such as flooding, severe thunderstorms, lightning, hurricanes, and even potential future weather issues such as snowstorms. Talking about them will help to reduce stress and get your parent’s preparations off to a good start.
- Build an emergency kit. Every home should have an emergency kit. It is important that your parent has the supplies that they may need to help them through a potentially dangerous situation in a way that is healthy and safe. This kit should have enough supplies to sustain your parent for a minimum of three days, preferably seven. For the best degree of safety and health, have an extra kit on hand for you or another person who may be in the home with your elderly parent at the time of an emergency.
- Have a communication tree. Establish a communication tree to ensure that everyone can get in touch with each other during an emergency. This tree should include you and any other members of your care team who would need to know your parent’s situation and may be able to help them during such an emergency.
- Equip them. In addition to the supplies that your parent should have in place, it is important that you also equip them with the information and knowledge that they need to get through such situations. This includes letting them know when and how to pay attention to weather service warnings and information, where to find out about evacuations, and who to contact if they are unable to get in touch with you.
If you are concerned about your parent’s ability to manage emergencies or disasters, starting home care for them may be the idea solution. An in-home senior care services provider can be with your parent to help them not only feel more prepared for potentially dangerous situations, but to get through them in the way that is right for them.
