Explore Elder Care Mobility Services

As your San Diego at home care specialists, it's our pleasure to offer these articles as your go-to resource, featuring information, tips, advice and much more.

Mobility issues affect about 35% of adults aged 70 or older. If your mom is struggling with mobility, it can make it harder for her to keep up with daily routines and self-care. It’s time to take a closer look at elder care services and how they help your mom age in place.

Ambulation

When mobility issues arise, it can make it hard to get your balance when getting out of bed in the morning. Your mom’s caregiver can support her while she gets to the toilet and walks out to the kitchen for breakfast.

After taking medications, her balance may not be ideal. Her caregiver can help her get to a chair to sit down until the dizziness diminishes. Her caregiver can help support her if she needs to walk up and down the stairs.

Bathing

When mobility is limited, it increases the risk of a fall. If your mom is unsteady standing on one foot, stepping into and out of the tub or shower is something she can’t do on her own. Hire a caregiver to support her when she takes a shower or bath.

Her caregiver can support her while she steps over the edge of the tub and settles on a shower seat. If your mom needs anything handled to her, her caregiver is there to get whatever she needs.

Errands

If your mom cannot run errands on her own, she can have an elder care provider help her out. The caregiver can run errands in place of your mom if that’s better.

Caregivers can do the grocery shopping, order groceries and prescription refills for delivery or pick-up, and pick up household necessities that are running low. If your mom wants to do these tasks but needs a helping hand, her caregiver can help her.

Housekeeping

Mobility makes it hard to move around the home or be on your feet for extended amounts of time. If your mom has a hard time with certain household chores, help her out. Arrange to have caregivers do heavier tasks like laundry, changing the sheets, and vacuuming.

Your mom can have a caregiver carry in boxes and bags that have been delivered. Her caregiver can wash the dishes and load or unload the dishwasher. Your mom still can do the rest

Transportation

When your mom has a hard time with mobility, it can impact her ability to drive. If she cannot quickly move a foot from the gas to the brake or have the flexibility to check her blindspots, she shouldn’t be behind the wheel. Hire elder care aides to drive her around to stores, businesses, and medical offices.

Elder care services are there to help your mom maintain her independence at home, even as her mobility changes. With elder care aides helping your mom during showers, transfers, and daily housekeeping routines, she’s assisted as much as is needed to keep her aging at home.
