Does the elderly loved one you are taking care of have heart disease? There are many different forms of heart disease and this disease can be extremely dangerous. It is important to make sure those with heart disease are avoiding certain foods and medications. This is because certain foods and medications will negatively interact with heart disease.
Some Fruits and Vegetables
While it is said that fruits and vegetables are always good, you should know that some fruits and vegetables aren’t good for those with heart disease. Pomegranate and grapefruit interact with many heart disease medications. Particularly, Zocor, Lipitor, and other high cholesterol-lowering medications. Green vegetables that are high in Vitamin K, such as kale and spinach, are a big problem for people who are on blood thinners. High-fat and high-sodium foods like bologna, aged cheese, pepperoni, and sausage can increase blood pressure, too.
Herbal and Nutritional Supplements
Many doctors will recommend that those with heart disease eat a wholesome and varied diet. However, it should be noted that there are some herbal and nutritional supplements that are dangerous to one’s blood pressure. Many of these supplements can also cause interactions with certain heart medications. If your loved one has heart disease, make sure they check with their doctor before taking any herbal or nutritional supplements.
NSAIDs
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories can help relieve pain. However, they might also cause one’s body to retain fluids. This can cause an increase in blood pressure which can be dangerous. It can increase the risk of a stroke or heart attack. Sometimes people with heart disease can take certain anti-inflammatory medications, but they should always check with their doctor before doing so, to make sure it is all right.
Cough Medications
Many of the cough medications contain NSAIDs. As previously mentioned, these NSAIDs can increase blood pressure and heart rate. Cough medications can also make certain heart medications not work properly. There are warnings on these products for those who already have high blood pressure.
Antibiotics
Unfortunately, there are certain antibiotics such as the commonly used Z-pack (Zithromax) that can cause abnormal or even fatal changes to one’s heartbeat. Those who have heart disease or who are at risk of heart disease should not use this antibiotic. They should also check with their doctor before using any other antibiotics.
Weight-Loss Medications or Supplements
It is important for everyone to know that weight-loss medications or supplements cause more stress on one’s heart and increases blood pressure, too. Anyone who has heart issues should always speak to their doctor before taking any type of weight-loss medication or weight-loss supplement.
Alcohol
It should also be known that heavy drinking can damage one’s heart and lead to heart failure. Anyone who has heart disease or an increased risk of heart disease should avoid consuming alcohol in any amount.
These are some of the foods and medications that should be avoided in those who have heart disease. If you or caregivers are taking care of your loved one and your loved one has heart disease, they should avoid these things, unless their doctor says otherwise.
