As the person your entire family feels is in charge of the elderly family member, you can certainly feel a great deal of pressure on your shoulders. You are the primary family caregiver. Even if your senior loved one receives elderly home care, you are the one who arranges and coordinates it. You are the person everyone asks to see how “Nanna” is doing.
Some caregivers are a lot more hands-on, providing full-time caregiving to their elderly loved one. There are over 65 million caregivers in America. To avoid the stress of this great responsibility from building up, there are some strategies you can do to find inner peace. Juggling family, caregiving, career, personal life and other things you want and need to do takes a lot of skill and patience. Some days it will go smoothly and other days will seem like a train wreck. Finding peace within yourself is a great way to stay as de-stressed as possible.
- Accept what you can’t change. Sure there are some things you wish were different. Some of them you can do something about and some of them you simply can’t. You can’t change your mother fell and needed hip surgery. Once you accept the change you can move on and see what you can do to influence the future. Before, she was against getting a caregiver. But now she will need some kind of elderly home care.
- Create a time and space that’s just for you. When you need to catch your breath and have a moment of peace to de-stress, go to your special spot. For one caregiver it was her garden; for another her favorite chair. Use it as your quiet space, your safe space.
- Be careful what you say to yourself, for your words have great power over your mood and behavior. Write and memorize a little positive mantra you can say to yourself when your day isn’t going as planned. It will help you to banish anger and fear and hang on to feelings of positivity.
- Remember that you matter, a lot! Caregiving for someone else is considered one of the highest callings a person can have. You are supporting the life of someone else. Your gentle touch, your listening ear, all the little and big things you do add up in a big way. You are a comforter, healer and you enrich the lives of others. Speak to yourself nicely and treat yourself with kindness. You are a fabulous person!
- Stay connected with your friends. Don’t downplay the significance of having an active social life. It is essential to your health and well-being. You can’t take care of someone else if you don’t first take care of yourself.
