Senior Care Fun La Jolla CA
Focusing on happiness in your senior care plan is one of the best ways to reduce your stress and anxiety, ward off feelings of depression, and enjoy an overall higher quality of life. Though you should be finding ways to enjoy and celebrate happiness every single day, August is Admit You’re Happy Month, the perfect opportunity for you to make embracing, enjoying, and expressing your happiness part of your regular senior care routine.
There are many ways that you can make happiness the centerpiece of care plan, but one fun and interactive way is to create a happiness chain with your elderly loved ones. Ask their senior care provider to get in on the fun with you so that all of you can talk about happiness and what it means in your lives together.
This easy project is a fun way to get your seniors’ minds active and engaged so that they can work on their cognitive processing and memory skills. It is also a chance to foster conversation and sharing, which boosts your emotional health and supports a stronger, more trust-based relationship between you and your aging loved ones, and them and their senior care provider.
What You’ll Need
- Construction paper in various colors
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Sharp scissors or a paper cutter
- Pens
- Staples
- Thumb tacks
What to Do
- Lay a piece of construction paper vertically on a flat surface. The short side should be facing you
- Use the ruler to measure 1 1/2 to 2-inch wide intervals across the width of the paper
- Turn the paper around and repeat the process. You should have lines at the same points on both short edges of the paper
- Use these lines to line up the ruler and draw straight lines across the paper using the pencil
- Repeat this process on several pieces of construction paper
- Use the sharp scissors or the paper cutter to cut along these lines to make long strips of construction paper
- If you prefer not to use scissors or a paper cutter, such as if you are doing this project with elderly parents who should not use sharp implements, you can also fold along the lines and press sharply to create a seam, then use it to carefully tear the strips apart
- Use the pens to write things that make you happy on the strips of paper. Write one thing on each strip. These moments of happiness can be as simple as “Time with my husband” or more detailed
- Once you have collected all of the strips, it is time to build the chain
- Start with one of the strips and fold it in so that the writing is on the inside of the paper and the two ends are slightly overlapped, creating a circle
- Use the stapler to staple the circle together
- Take another strip and feed it through the first circle before stapling it
- Continue this way to create a chain
- Use a thumb tack to secure one end of the chain to a wall
- Throughout the day take links off of the chain and read about what makes your loved ones happy. Use these to start conversations and sharing together.
