Since your mom fell and broke her hip, she’s had a harder time standing up and sitting down. She works with a physical therapist, but she’s still finding it difficult. Have you looked at her furniture as part of the problem?
Choose Higher Seating
Your mom’s knees and hips should be even, or her hips should be slightly higher than her knees when seated. If her knees are higher, it will require more leg muscle to stand up.
Before shopping, measure your mom’s legs from the floor to her knee. Have her sit down in a chair that allows her to place her feet flat on the floor, without her knees being higher than her hips. Measure the distance from the floor to her hip.
Take those measurements and ensure the furniture you choose is high enough to match her knee and hip height. If it’s too low, move on to another choice.
Tall Backs Help the Back
A tall back seat supports the neck and back. This eliminates any back or neck pain that might make it hard for your mom to stand back up after she’s been seated for a while.
Firm Cushions Are Important
If a sofa or chair is too soft, your mom will sink into it. That makes it harder to get in and out of. Get furniture with firmer cushions without being uncomfortable. If it feels like she’s sitting on concrete, your mom will not like her new seating.
Aim for cushions that support without being rock-hard. Pillows she can place behind her back also help with support.
Steady Arms Offer Support
Arms that your mom can hold and use for support while she stands make it easier to sit down and get up. While she might like the feel of rolled, pillowy arms when she’s laying down, they’re not supportive when using them to stand up.
Make Sure It Will Fit
Make sure the furniture fits the space. If it’s too large, it becomes a tripping hazard. She could end up kicking it each time she walks past.
Would a Standing Recliner Help?
She may not love the idea of having a standing recliner do the work, but if it keeps her safe, it’s important. A standing recliner is powered to tilt forward while rising to bring your mom to a standing position. It does the work for her.
