Long-Distance Caregiver: Whether you expect to eventually become your senior’s family caregiver or you suddenly find yourself in that position, it’s a lot more complicated when you live far away.
Here are some things for you to keep in mind as you navigate this new experience of being a long-distance caregiver.
Hire a Caregiver to Spend Time with Your Senior
Even if your elderly family member is convinced that she doesn’t need extra help, hiring a caregiver for just an hour or two a week can ease your mind considerably. And it doesn’t hurt for your senior to get accustomed to having a little bit of help now so that if those needs change, it’s not as big a change. You’ll have a better idea of what’s really going on with your senior by being able to talk to the caregiver, too.
Educate Yourself about What She Needs Now and in the Future
If you haven’t already become as educated as possible about your senior’s health and needs, now is the time to do so. It’s important that you understand what she needs now so that you can understand how those needs are going to change. Being a family caregiver, especially one who lives far away, means anticipating needs as much as you can.
Offer Emotional Support to Your Senior
It’s possible that even if you’re not able to offer as much hands-on support to your elderly family member as you would like, you can still be a huge emotional support for her. If she’s facing chronic health issues or other concerns, that can be a big emotional weight for her to bear alone. Just being a kind ear for her can be immensely helpful.
Long-Distance Caregiver: Visit When You Are Able to Do So
When you are able to visit, make the most of your time with your senior. Part of the time that you spend with her may have to be about ensuring that you’ve both got plans in case something goes wrong. It’s also a good idea for you to meet with her doctors if possible. But don’t forget to also just spend time enjoying each other’s company.
Becoming a long-distance caregiver for someone that you love can be a big change, but with the right plans in place, you’ll be able to support your senior’s needs better than you might have thought possible. Over time, you may need to tweak your plan to keep meeting her needs.
