It’s always been your dad’s wish to age at home. He likes the family home and doesn’t want to downsize. But, he’s having a harder time taking care of himself. What are the six aspects of self-care that are more likely to be difficult for your dad?
Daily Walks
A daily walk benefits your dad’s physical and mental health, but he doesn’t like to walk alone. He’s too anxious to go out without company, so he skips walks until you visit. An elder care aide can walk with him to ensure he gets daily exercise but isn’t overly anxious while going out.
Laundry
Clean clothes, towels, and sheets are all part of good hygiene. Your dad’s not doing as well with that as he should.
Your dad’s laundry room is in the basement, and he dislikes going up and down those stairs. It’s too dark and steep. He doesn’t do laundry without your help, but you can’t stop by more than once every few weeks. He ends up wearing dirty clothing longer than he should.
With an elder care aide’s help, your dad’s laundry is done every week. He’ll have fresh sheets on his bed, new towels are hung, and dirty clothing and linens are washed, dried, and put away.
Meals
Your dad needs to eat meals that balance whole grains, lean protein, fresh vegetables, fruits, and dairy. He struggles with meal preparation and eats a lot of frozen pizza, ramen noodles, and frozen dinners.
Elder care can help your dad plan a weekly menu, take him shopping to purchase the items he needs, and prepare meals and snacks for him. He’ll have home-cooked meals that meet his nutritional needs like calcium, B vitamins, antioxidants, and protein.
Medications
Your dad forgets to take his medications each day. When he does remember to take them, he forgets that he’s supposed to take some with a glass of milk or a meal to lower the risk of nausea. A caregiver can help him keep track of the medications he needs to take and remind him how to take them.
Transportation
Your dad cannot drive, so he skips necessary appointments like his dental exams and doctor’s check-ups. It’s time to arrange elder care to have a caregiver drive him to his appointments, take him shopping, and help him run errands like getting prescription refills.
Vacuuming
Your dad has a hard time with allergies, and his carpeting collects dust and pet dander. He can sweep hard floors, but his vacuum is too heavy for him to vacuum areas like the stairs to his bedroom and his bedroom.
A caregiver can vacuum dust, hair, crumbs, and dander for him and lower the number of allergens within his home. Clean floors also keep some insect pests, like ants, out of his home.
Arrange elder care services once you’ve narrowed down the things your dad can and cannot do on his own. With an elder care aide supporting his desire to remain independent, your dad is safe at home, but he’s not struggling to complete daily tasks. Call a home care specialist to learn more.
